How to Play Bocce
Objective: Be the first (you or the computer) to reach 25 points. Each hand, you and the computer each roll out three "bocce" and try to land each one as close as possible to the pallino — without going over.
Setup
Each hand, you and the computer are each dealt three bocce (a hidden pair of cards each) and a hand of 3 cards you can see. The rest of the deck becomes the Draw Pile.
Each Frame (there are 3 per hand)
Every frame starts with the lag — the toss that sets the pallino. You and the computer each secretly commit one card from your hand as your half of the pallino. Once both are committed, they're revealed and added together — that sum is this frame's pallino number, the target you're both rolling for.
Then you each turn over that frame's bocce (two hidden cards, added together) and compare the total to the pallino. If you're under it, you may draw more cards from the Draw Pile to inch closer — but if you go over, your bocce is discarded ("out of bounds") and scores nothing. Aces count as 1 or 10, your choice. Face cards are worth 10 during the lag (when setting the pallino), but only 1 once they're part of a bocce total.
Knocking Bocce Out
If your finished bocce total exactly matches an opponent bocce total that was already finished this hand, that earlier bocce is knocked out of play and scores zero — no matter how good it was.
Scoring (per bocce, at the end of the hand)
Exactly on the pallino: 3 points
Within 2 points below the pallino: 2 points
3 or more points below the pallino: 1 point
Over the pallino (busted) or knocked out: 0 points
Winning
Points accumulate hand after hand. First to 25 points wins the game.
